In numerology, the soul urge number — also called the heart’s desire number — is said to describe what you want most deep down. It comes from the vowels in your full birth name. How the soul urge number is calculated

1. Write your full name as it appears on your birth certificate.
2. Give each letter its value from the Pythagorean chart (A = 1 … I = 9, J = 1 … R = 9, S = 1 … Z = 8).
3. Add up the values of the vowels only.
4. Reduce the total by adding its digits until you reach a single digit — unless you reach 11, 22 or 33, which numerologists keep as master numbers.

Some numerologists reduce each name separately before adding; others add all the vowels first. The two methods can give different master numbers, so the calculator shows the simple method: add every vowel, then reduce.

What about Y?

Numerology traditions disagree about Y. A common rule treats Y as a vowel when it acts as one — when there is no other vowel next to it, as in “Lynn” or “Tyler” — and as a consonant when it sits beside a vowel, as in “Yolanda” or “Bryan”. Others always count it as a consonant, or always as a vowel. The calculator lets you choose and highlights each vowel it counts.

Worked example

For “Maria Elena Lopez”, the vowels are A, I, A, E, E, A, O, E with values 1 + 9 + 1 + 5 + 5 + 1 + 6 + 5 = 33 — a master number, so it is not reduced: a soul urge of 33 (master teacher). The consonants add to 39 (personality 3) and all letters to 72 (expression 9).

Name changes, nicknames and spelling

Numerologists traditionally use the full name given at birth, including middle names, because it is seen as the original “blueprint”. Many also calculate the name you use now — a married name, a shortened first name or a chosen name — and read the two together, the birth name describing underlying motivations and the current name the energy you present. Where numerology comes from

Modern Western name numerology is usually credited to early twentieth-century writers who popularised a letter chart named after Pythagoras, the ancient Greek philosopher, although there is no evidence he used it. Other traditions, such as Chaldean numerology, use different letter values and give different results for the same name. The calculator follows the widely used Pythagorean chart.

Numerology and evidence

Numerology is a traditional belief system, not a science: controlled studies have not found that numbers derived from names or dates predict personality or life events. Many people still enjoy it as a way to reflect on their motivations, start conversations or add a playful touch to journaling.
